Itty bitty Steps

Small little actions lead to big changes

I called my wife on a Sunday, as I always do. She was lying down resting after having just walked the dog and taken our two boys to the park. There was something on her mind, I could tell. She was a bit off.

There was a project for work that was on her mind she couldn’t shake. It involved her coordinating other collegues to do a company wide presentation, she works for a flash Telecoms company, an one person in particular hadn’t shown up to contribute their input yet. The review time was fast approaching and she wanted to be organised.

With all the work remining, reviewing the presentation and the time closing in, she felt a little nag in the back of her head that wouldn’t go away. I asked her “What is one little action you can do right now that will make you feel like you’ve made progress toward your goal?”

‘A bullet point list of discussion points’ – That’s what I can do! I gave her a target of 15 minutes. Just set a timer of 15 minutes to get your work done and then stop. So she gave it a crack and got sruck in.

The strangest thing happened. She’s in a better place now then she was before she started and now she feels like a weight has been lifted off of her back.

Funny how she set herself a small achieveable target of 15 minutes of dedicated work and then that went on to build momentum for her to go even further and be far more prepared for her deadline.

Somethimes we just need to make a small, insignificant start that will eventually build some momentum in our lives. This applies to other areas like money fitness. You want to start a side hustle? Just take one little step, buy a book, take a course, go knock on someones door and ask what problems they have that you could solve?

Want to have a better body? Start going for a 30 minute walk around the block. Go to the gym for 20 minutes. Just something small!

We all get overwhelmend by the complexties of life sometimes and the decisions of life can cripple us. I encourage everyone reading, including my future self who will face fear and anxiety at some point, just do something little because “Action Conquers Fear”
